For donations, make checks payable to "American Red Cross," and mail to the address above. Red Cross representatives say that if a donor wants a gift designated for a specific purpose he should precisely specify that purpose in writing along with the gift. However, the Red Cross asks that, whenever possible, donors not designate contributions for a specific disaster. That way, if the Red Cross has any donations left over after relief efforts have ended for a given disaster, excess resources can be used to aid victims of subsequent disasters instead of having to be returned. Trying to hunt down and provide refunds to donors with designated gifts also creates a significant extra financial burden for the mostly-volunteer, non-profit organization.

Oregon Public Safety Memorial Fund

The Oregon legislature created this fund in 1999 as a means to assist the families of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty. The fund also provides benefits to those who are permanently disabled. A five-member board (appointed by the governor) oversees the fund, while DPSST carries out the day-to-day administration of fund activities.
